Architectural Excellence + Innovation
When Airbus Defence and Space announced that it would be opening the world’s first High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite flight base in Wyndham, Western Australia, Black Diamond was contracted to create a fully-operational base camp facility for the staff. The airfield in Wyndham serves as the world’s first launch site for Zephyr’s solar-electric stratospheric unmanned aerial vehicle. The location was chosen because it offered largely-unrestricted airspace and reliable weather conditions.
Due to the remote location of the project, Black Diamond focused on creating a workforce housing and workspace solution that was not only comfortable and self-sufficient, but also energy-efficient and cost-effective. Black Diamond incorporated several innovative techniques and features to maximize the productivity of the offsite construction.
Designed and installed in less than 30 days, the facility includes messing, workforce housing and workstations. Amenities include a kitchen, recreation room, First-Aid room and ambulant toilet facilities. Other highlights of the project include a large office complex that is tailored to the crew’s needs; elevated modular walkways to connect the accommodation areas to the rest of the camp; and purpose-built containerized storage rooms offering controlled environments for high-value battery storage.
